Living in Paris, the renowned fashion historian and collector Alexander Vasiliev has spent many years studying the influence of the white emigration on European fashion: fashion houses and embroidery workshops founded by native emigrants, elegant mannequins and society beauties who became influential style icons.

White emigration in Harbin, Constantinople, Berlin, and Paris, great fashion houses such as the legendary embroidery workshop "Kitmir," which had an exclusive contract with Chanel, the elegant fashion house Irfe, founded by the Yusupov princes, and the Kiev-born Valentina Sanina, whose Valentina fashion house worked in the USA and created clothing for stars like Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo, the world-famous fashion illustrator Erte, whose drawings laid the foundations for the aesthetics of art deco, the Jewish artist of Poltava origin who conquered Paris under the name of Sonia Delaunay, the stunningly beautiful mannequin princess Natalia Paley – without these and many other names, it is impossible to imagine Paris fashion in the first half of the 20th century.
